Ari Shavit is a left-wing Israeli journalist, formerly for Haaretz, and advocates against Israel’s occupying settlements in Palestine. He resigned from Haaretz because of sexual misconduct allegations. He was born in Rehovot, Israel, and studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is the descendent of early Zionists who migrated from Europe to Israel around the turn of the 20th century. Shavit’s work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and Politico. He authored My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel in 2013 and subsequently traveled across the United States discussing Judaism and Israel with Jews residing in the United States.
Mohammed Yasser Abdel Rahman Abdel Raouf Arafat al-Qudwa al-Husseini, commonly referred to as Yasser Arafat, was a Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization and President of the Palestinian National Authority. He was an Arab nationalist and founding member of the Fatah political party. He negotiated a temporary peace agreement with Israeli leaders in the early 1990s, which resulted in the Oslo Accords. In 1998, amid Israeli-Palestinian hostilities, he negotiated the Wye River Memorandum with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
David Ben-Gurion was the primary founder of the State of Israel and Israel’s first Prime Minister. He was a Zionist and the Executive Head of the World Zionist Organization prior to founding and leading the state of Israel.
Herbert Bentwich was a Jewish British lawyer and a Zionist leader. Bentwich was Shavit’s great-grandfather. In 1897 he led a group of 21 Jews from Europe and the United States on a tour of Palestine. In 1899 Bentwich founded the British Zionist Federation, and he served as its vice-chairman. In 1911 he purchased Palestinian land to settle on behalf of the Maccabean Land Company. After 1921 he visited Palestine regularly, and he moved to Jerusalem in 1929.
Shmaryahu Gutman was an Israeli archaeologist, born to Russian immigrants in Scotland. His family emigrated to Palestine when he was three. Gutman led the intelligence unit of the Haganah and negotiated to bring Iraqi Jews to Israel. In the 1960s and 1970s, he worked on a team that excavated Masada. He later conducted youth retreats to Masada.
Benjamin Netanyahu is an Israeli politician. He is the current Prime Minister of Israel, a position he has held since 2009. He was previously Israel’s Prime Minister from 1996 to 1999. He is the Chairman of the Likud-National Liberal Movement and the longest serving Prime Minister in Israeli history. Netanyahu was born in Tel Aviv and raised in both Jerusalem and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He returned to Israel from the United States in 1967 to join the Israel Defense Forces, in which he took part in many missions and was shot in the shoulder. After being discharged with the rank of captain, he obtained both a bachelor of science and master of science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has served as the Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations, elected member of the Knesset, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Finance. Netanyahu has been under investigation for corruption since 2016. He was indicted in 2019 on charges of breach of trust, bribery, and fraud.
Aryeh Deri is an Israeli politician and a founder of the Shas party. He is a Minister of the Interior, Minister of the Development of the Negev and Galilee, and a member in the Security Cabinet of Israel, and was formerly Minister of the Economy. He served a three-year sentence following a conviction for bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. Many believe his conviction was politically motivated.
